About the Water Ambassador Programme
Green-Schools, in partnership with Irish Water, is now running its 7th year of the water ambassador programme. This programme aims to encourage active participation on the Green-Schools water theme, to educate participants on water conservation issues and equip ambassadors with the tools to spread their knowledge to the whole school community, thus increasing awareness, and improving the use and protection of our water sources.
This year’s programme will run from November 2021 till April 2022. Successful candidates will first take part in an online, interactive, training day which will involve speakers from Green-Schools, Irish Water, Clean Coasts and past ambassadors, as well as group work, demonstrations, quizzes and games.
Water ambassadors will also be able to take part in:
• Green-Schools facilitated network meetings with other schools
• Clean-up of a local beach, river or lake and/or water quality testing
• Virtual tour of a water or a wastewater treatment plant
• A second focused support and training day
The Green-Schools co-ordinators and/or water ambassador support teachers will also receive simultaneous support, training and the opportunity to network with other coordinators.
School coordinators/supporting teachers and student participants will receive a water pack and water ambassadors will also be in with a chance to win fantastic prizes and trophies.
The programme is open to all secondary level years that are on or have completed the water theme, more than one student can apply per school, they can apply as individuals or as part of a group (max 3).
Students and coordinators will be required to complete a brief progress report in February (deadline Friday the 18th) to help assess student needs and develop focused content for support sessions. A short final report is also due in April (deadline Friday the 29th) to let us know about their actions and how they passed on their knowledge throughout the year. All students that participate in the programme will be Green-Schools Water Ambassadors however, some students will be chosen from each region as Green-Schools Regional Water Ambassadors and will be awarded at a prestigious ceremony in May 2022 where they will receive a trophy and a prize.
